Seasonal Sites

Located in Rigaud, QuébecCamping Choisy is now  one of our favorite campgrounds!  We camped here in August of 2016 with 3 other families.  Located 50 minutes from Montréal and 90 minutes from Ottawa, this award winning campground is well worth the stay.  Having changed owners in the last few years, many renovations and changes have taken place to improve your visit.  Have a look through their incredibly well done website to found out everything you’d want to know and see pictures of this great campground.  This large campground has it all!  Two pools, mini-golf, a playground, and arcade, evening family entertainment, a full service restaurant, beautifully maintained grounds with mature trees, etc.  Require supplies, gas or want to go off site for lunch (Tim Horton’s, McD, Harvey’s), you are a 5 minute drive away from Auberge Hudson Inn, a popular highway pit stop between Ottawa and Montréal.

The Campsites

Camping Choisy is a 75% seasonal campground.  Have a look at their map to see the 81 available for transient use.  This map will also show you what services are available on each site.  39 sites have 3 services (water/elec./sewer), 35 sites have water/elec. only and 7 creek site sites have no services on them.  Electrical service ranges from 15-50 amps.

Sites in the River Section (R1-24) are away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the campground.  Located on the edge of the small river on grass covered ground and surrounded by trees, this is a beautiful section but note that you must drive down a step hill to get to it.  I’m not sure I’d want to drive down there or back up with our pop-up trailer…especially after or during a rain fall.  We’ve had friends almost get stuck down there with their trailer.  A great spot for tenting in my opinion.

The sites in the the Park Section (P1-46) are great. Like most sites in this campground, they have a sandy to hard dirt base, separated by trees or hedges and are well shaded unless you are staying around the park.  That middle section, specifically P15-19, is an open grass field with gravel strips  for tents and trailers.  There is some privacy but you are on a main camp ground road and you may have kids running through your site to get to and from the park or the bathrooms.  This middle portion would be great if you’re camping with friends or family and wanted to share common space.  It’s also a great spot to camp if you want to be able to watch your kids play at the park from the comfort of your picnic table.  Sites P24-36 have a steep ravine behind their sites.  These sites are beautiful but if you stay here with adventurous children, make sure they are aware of how far they can go safely.  We found that there were a lot of wasps during the time we were here.  P5-13 & P44-46 also back onto a ravine but it’s not as steep as the one behind P24-36. Great things about of staying in the Park Section are the close proximity to the recently renovated comfort station, a playground, and an open field where many of the organized activities are held (ie. movie at dusk).  To get to the pool and main entrance from here will take a 10 mins walk, adult speed.  If you have very little ones, you may want to consider bringing a wagon to cart them around or using a stroller.  I know, it’s big gear to bring camping, but in this case, it’s worth it.  Older kids and adults will enjoy the convenience of having a bicycle to get around.  There is also a small train that drives around to bring people to and from the main entrance area.

Sites in the Arbre Section (A210-219) are a nice section to stay in but you will be near the 2 lane highway so expect the noise that will go along with that.  I personally find the drone of highway traffic fine and I don’t find the traffic on this highway extremely busy.  This section is very close to a nice comfort station and the sites around you are seasonal for the most part.  Sites in Section Fleur (F35-40) are nice and close to all the amenities!  These tree covered sites are hard to come by, so you’ll need to reserve early if you want to snag one of these.  You are close to to the highway here, but otherwise it’s a quiet area.  If you are camping without children you’ll be a 1 minute walk to the adult only pool and hot tub.

Have a look at individual sites with their website’s “interactive visit” before reserving to see what your site will look like.  With this incredible function, you can look at all transient sites as well as the pools, the mini-golf course, the playground, pétanque and bocce ball grounds.  Awesome job on your website Camping Choisy!  This is exactly what this camping mom loves to see when searching for camping locations!

Their regular rates ranges from  $42-$58/night for 2 adults and all dependent children!  No extra charges if you have more than 2 kids!  Check-in and check -out is at 1 pm but if your site is available, you can stay till 6 pm at no additional fee.  Pets are welcome but must be leashed at all times.

The Bathrooms

Bathrooms in the River Section consist of two outhouses.  There are no sinks for hand washing.  The newly renovated comfort station in the Park Section is great.  The building contains 1 bathroom with toilet/sink only and 4 private bathrooms, each containing a wheelchair accessible shower area with many hand bars, large enough to wash yourself and your kids comfortably, an adjustable height shower head and containing a large bench if you need it.  The bathroom also includes a toilet and a sink set into a decent sized counter so that you can place all your toiletries without worrying that they’ll fall.  There is also a bench near the toilet.  The perfect camping bathroom right!  On the outside of this building, at each bathroom door are a small green light and a red one.  When the bathroom door is available the green light is on.  When the bathroom is occupied, the red light turns on. The bathroom door must be locked from the inside to make this happen.  The building also features and exterior dish washing station boasting 2 deep sinks and faucets with sprayer.

The comfort station in the Arbre Section aren’t as recent but are brightly lit, very clean and well maintained.  Both the men’s and women’s bathrooms have a long counter with sinks, 2 toilet stalls and shower stalls.  They also have a wall mounted, diaper changing table. Each individual shower stall has a change area with a wooden bench and a ceramic lip in the floor into the curtained shower area that you will have to step over.  On the outside, there is a payphone if you ever need it.

The comfort station at the main hall are dated looking but are clean and in good working order.  They are conveniently located close to the pools, the restaurant, the playground, mini-golf, trampolines, etc.  They include a tiled counter with 2 sinks, bathrooms stalls, shower stalls and a wall mounted diaper changing table.  The shower stalls have a bench is their change area and hooks to hang towels and clothes.  The mosaic tiled floor area in the shower itself is raised by about 1/2″.  If you are at the pool, that area has two little change rooms that have a bathroom inside.  Everything in there is wet from little kids jumping out of the pool and bee lining for a quick pee but it’s to be expected in this situation and it’s better than walking over to the main hall bathrooms.

The Main Hall and Activities
The main hall is where you’ll find the reception area and the convenience store, the mini-golf course (Free!), the arcade/pool/air hockey/ping pong hall (Free!), the community room, bathrooms/showers, the laundry facilities and propane station.  Organized craft activities are held in the large community room.  On weekends, this room is the place to be for dances, shows such as a hypnotist (the place was packed!),  bingo games and much more.  Check out the event schedule to see what kind of fun you’ll be having during your stay.  The convenience store has all the camping staples you could need.  They even have an ice-cream bar (ice cream cones, sundays, milkshakes, yum!) and yes, to my children’s delight, they do have slushies lol.  To the side of the main hall is the pool & splash pad (supervised by lifeguards), tennis courts, basketball courts, 2 in-ground trampolines,  a bouncy pillow, swings and a play structure.  There is also a small parking lot for those who would rather drive up to this area in order to bring pool gear/cooler/kids complaining it’s to faaaarrr to walk.  This parking lots hold a small fruit and vegetable stand on weekends if you’re interested in purchasing fresh and local produce.  Are you camping without the kids and would like to enjoy some kid free activities?  Check out the adults only pool and hot tub and catch a game of bocce ball, pétanque or shuffle board near the Fleur Section, next to the restaurant.  Speaking of their restaurant, if you’re not in the mood to cook you can order chip stand type of food (fries, hamburgers, pogos, pizza, etc.) from their take out window or get cleaned up and go in for a nice sit down dinner.  Their menu includes items such as filet mignon, salmon, chicken brochettes and pasta.  They also have a bar area if you simply want to sit and have a drink.

Parent’s Overview
We really enjoyed this campground. So many things have been renovated, upgraded or completely taken down and rebuilt since I’d been there for a girl’s glamping weekend many years ago. The bathrooms are now fantastic, especially the ones in the Park Section.  The new pool and splash pad are a huge improvement to what was there before. There are tons of fun activities for all ages. We love that we didn’t have to pay extra for having a third child!  It was also really nice that activities such as mini-putt, the arcade as the bouncy pillow were free to use.  Most places charge for these types of activities. One minor complaint is the amount of wasps we had in the Park Section. Not much to be done about that I suppose other that keep your food and drinks covered and keep your exterior garbage bag or container well closed to not attract them. Would we recommend Camping Choisy to other campers?  Absolutely!

Kids Overview
Kid 1 – “I love playing in the forest and biking all over. I like the free arcade room the most! We should move there. I didn’t like some of the mean seasonal kids.  Where are these kid’s parents!?”  LOL. Mini adults are funny.
Kid 2 – “I liked swimming in the pool and jumping on the trampolines.  I don’t like walking to go to the pool….it’s to faaaarrrr.”
Kid 3 – “I loved playing air hockey with Papa in the arcade room, making a fort in the forest, the bouncy pillow and using my bike everywhere but then the chain broke and I was so sad.  When am I getting a new bike Maman?”
